How Older Adults Stay Active at St. John’s

St. John’s is home to many educational and social programs that allow residents to prioritize their mental wellness, but St. John’s communities also offer a wide range of fitness programs that promote activity and physical wellness. In observance of Men’s Health Month, we are highlighting some of the amazing fitness programs that many St. John’s Independent Living residents participate in to fully embrace living.

Men’s Health Month

The Men’s Health Network says that the purpose of National Men’s Health Month is to “heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.” The health and wellness programs at St. John’s Meadows and Brickstone by St. John’s are open to residents of all genders and physical abilities, so everyone can stay active. With St. John’s location in the heart of Highland Park, connecting with nature is also easy to do.

‘The location is phenomenal,” says St. John’s Meadows Resident David Day. “That is part of the reason why I came to live here.” Day leads a walking group that meets every Friday. The group of 10 or more residents walk throughout the trails that are intertwined with the St. John’s communities.

Fitness Programs at St. John’s:

Gerald Blake, another St. John’s Meadows Resident, says that St. John’s “is just a great place to be” due to the offerings. “Steve offers such a great balance and fall prevention course.”

Many of the programs like Balance and Fall Prevention are led by St. John’s Wellness Specialist Steve Gardner who says, “exercise can do wonders for the older adult population.” While Gardner leads a majority of the fitness programs, residents are also encouraged and supported in organizing and running their own activities.
