How St. John’s Addresses the ‘Silent Struggle’ Among Older Adults
St. John’s Meadows Elder Advocate Hannah De George shared her expertise on the older adult mental health experience in a recent Rochester Business Journal article. In the piece, De George discusses the importance of staying connected and addressing the silent, yet growing struggle of mental health in the older adult community.
“Older individuals experience many things that can take a toll on their mental health, like new diagnoses, vision or hearing loss, grief, anxiety, or depression. In turn, mental health needs to be treated as a fundamental part of senior living,” writes De George.
As an elder advocate, De George provides a listening ear to the independent living residents at St. John’s.
“For years, physical care and entertainment programming have taken the forefront in senior living communities,” writes De George. “With mental health issues on the rise, it is time for senior living communities to set a new standard of what community care looks like.”
At St. John’s Meadows and Brickstone by St. John’s, residents have many opportunities for holistic wellness thanks to social programming centered around mental and physical health. With a fully stacked monthly calendar filled with stimulating activities and resident-run groups — there is something for everyone.
