Building a Stronger Workforce in Senior Care

In a recent Rochester Business Journal article, St. John’s Vice President of Human Resources Dean Moore shares his insights on human resources (HR) strategies for better employee retention in older adult care.

In his article, “Building a stronger workforce: HR Strategies for retaining top talent in the senior services sector,” Moore breaks down the complexities of working in older adult healthcare, how to cultivate a positive work atmosphere, and what he thinks the future of HR holds.

Moore writes that “focusing on employee engagement, professional development, and a supportive workplace culture, senior services providers can build a workforce that both enhances the quality of care for its residents.”  Enhanced care can also create a “sense of fulfillment among staff members, empowering them to deliver compassionate, high-quality service,” according to Moore.

In the world of nonprofit organizations such as St. John’s, Moore says that “it is imperative to focus on adding value for the employee in other ways.” Moore references additional benefits that St. John’s employees are eligible for, including EZaccessMD and Payactiv.

Moore says there are other meaningful ways to support employees in tandem with traditional incentives like competitive pay and benefits.

“Whether through technology, training programs, or mentorship, there are ways to invest in your team and demonstrate to prospective employees that you are an employer that invests in its employees.”

Looking to the future, Moore writes, “Building a stronger workforce in senior services is not just about hiring the right people; it is about creating an environment where staff members feel supported, valued, and motivated to deliver care.”

He says that this can be done through prioritizing employee wellness programs and initiatives.
