Nurses Week 2025: Mentorship Matters and the Future of Nursing

Since the day she started at St. John’s Home, director of nursing Natasha Jackson has emphasized the importance of mentorship, as well as nurses and CNAs supporting each other. “I stand on the shoulders of many nurses who came before me,” she explains, crediting the valuable guidance and support she received from her own mentors as she has built her nursing career in long-term care.

Jackson shared her perspectives on nursing in senior care settings in a column published in the May 9 issue of the Rochester Business Journal.

“Choosing to become a nurse,” Jackson explains, “is more than just a career. It is a way of life, a passion to serve others that is an innate part of who you are. It is ever more important for nurses to life each other up through mentorship and support programs that can change lives and help others develop successful nursing careers.”

In the article, which was published online May 6– the first day of National Nurses Week– Jackson also addresses the state of senior living nursing and ways to alleviate nursing shortages. She also discusses how her team has made it a priority to welcome nursing students back to St. John’s Home. Since the start of 2025, both Bryant and Stratton and Rochester Education Opportunity Center nursing students have returned to our community for hands-on clinical experience.
