The St. John’s Home Therapeutic Recreation (TR) team helps create meaningful experiences for residents every day. Through engaging programs and activities, the team encourages connection, creativity, and a sense of belonging. During National Therapeutic Recreation Week, St. John’s is recognizing the dedicated professionals who make these moments possible.

Therapeutic recreation specialists use activity-based programming to support residents’ social, emotional, and physical well-being. At St. John’s Home, the team plans a variety of activities, including art programs, musical performances, seasonal celebrations, games, and opportunities for residents and families to spend time together.

Natalia Vaughn

Led by Director of Therapeutic Recreation John Eilers-Lloyd, TR specialists Natalia Vaughn, Debra Siracuse, Margo Perine, and Courtney Cartwright work together to create programs that support residents’ interests, abilities and individual needs.

“That’s why we’re really here day to day, to give them the highest quality of life,” Eilers-Lloyd said. “Make them feel like they are important, loved, and that they feel purposeful. They still have a lot to give.”

For Natalia Vaughn, who also serves as the Dementia Resource Center respite coordinator, personalization is key when supporting residents living with dementia.

Debra Siracuse, LCAT

“We meet them where they are mentally and accept them for who they are,” Vaughn said. “In their stage of life, they need activities personalized to their needs and diagnosis.”

The team also uses creative programs to encourage self-expression and connection. Through Art in the Studio, residents have the opportunity to paint, create, and explore different forms of art.

Debra Siracuse, a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT), leads the weekly program. She sees firsthand how creativity can positively impact residents.

“My favorite part of working with residents is fostering creative expression and creating a positive atmosphere where they feel supported,” Siracuse said.

Margo Perine

Residents like Marcie Gass know the impact these programs can have. Art in the Studio is one of her favorite activities at St. John’s Home.

“I love Art in the Studio,” Marcie said. “I like taking a lead and helping the others.”

For Marcie, time in the art studio provides more than a creative outlet. She says it makes her feel “useful” and “creative,” highlighting the importance of having opportunities to continue learning, contributing and sharing talents at every stage of life.

Courtney Cartwright

Whether through personalized dementia programming, creative activities or community celebrations, the Therapeutic Recreation team continues to enrich life at St. John’s Home. Each program creates opportunities for residents to connect, participate, and enjoy meaningful moments.

St. John’s Home thanks John, Natalia, Debra, Margo, and Courtney for the compassion and dedication they bring to residents and their families every day.
