St. John’s residents are staying active, getting outdoors, and finding ways to support their health and well-being. During Healthy Aging Month, 13WHAM visited Brickstone by St. John’s to highlight how residents incorporate movement and wellness into their daily lives.

For resident Marilyn Colby one of the keys to healthy aging is finding the joy of getting outside, spending time in nature, and staying active. She also emphasized the importance of intentional movement as it offers benefits that everyday activities may not provide. “I like the fact that (with the exercises) all the joints get to be involved. You move all the different body parts”, Marilyn shared. “You don’t normally get a chance to do that if you’re just washing dishes”.

At St. John’s, residents have a variety of opportunities to stay active and engaged. One of those is “Movement with Josh,” a wellness class led by Josh Lamere, Wellness Specialist at St. John’s Meadows.

The class uses chair exercises, dumbbells, and mini yoga balls to support mobility and strength, while also creating an opportunity for residents to exercise and connect with one another. Josh’s approach to wellness focuses on the whole person, with programs designed to support physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being.

The opportunities extend beyond fitness classes. St. John’s Meadows and Brickstone by St. John’s share nearly 65 acres of land, including trails that give residents opportunities to walk, bike, and spend time outdoors. Together, these programs and spaces support an active lifestyle that residents can make their own.
