St. John’s Vice President Speaks About Senior Living Trends in Rochester Business Journal

St. John’s is proud to highlight that the leadership and industry expertise of  our Vice President of Senior Housing Tony Zaccaglino was featured in a Rochester Business Journal article published in the January 23 print edition and online, which examined the trends and opportunities shaping senior living in 2026. Zaccaglino joined other regional senior living leaders in sharing insights on evolving resident expectations, innovation in housing and amenities, and how providers like St. John’s are adapting to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s older adults.

Embracing Growing Interest in Senior Living

One of the most encouraging trends Zaccaglino shares is the increasing number of older adults exploring senior living communities — a signal that today’s seniors are thinking proactively about lifestyle, connection, and quality of life. According to Zaccaglino, this growing interest is not just a demographic shift, but also a chance to rethink how we introduce people to the possibilities of community living.

To meet this demand, St. John’s is exploring new ways for prospective residents to stay connected while they wait for their preferred home to become available. These “membership-style” opportunities aim to engage future community members early in St. John’s life and culture, as well as respect the comfort and routines of current residents.

Understanding Resident Preferences

Zaccaglino also notes that today’s residents and future residents bring more defined preferences when it comes to housing features and lifestyle amenities. This shift reflects broader trends across senior housing where residents are looking for:

  • Rooms and layouts that support comfort and independence

  • Wellness programs and enrichment activities

  • High-quality dining and social experiences

  • Flexible and convenient transportation options

He sees this increase in expectations as a positive driver of innovation across the industry. Rather than a burden, these preferences motivate providers like St. John’s to elevate services and community life for all residents.

Innovation in Resident Experience: Lot 54 and Beyond

A tangible example of this innovative spirit is St. John’s planned Lot 54 restaurant on the Brickstone campus. Zaccaglino shared that this new restaurant, which is set to open in the Spring, with a focus on exceptional food, community engagement, and hospitality, speaks directly to the evolving interests of today’s seniors. It will serve not only residents but also staff members and the public, making it a community hub as much as a dining destination.

Plans also include enhancements at St. John’s Meadows, such as expanded gathering spaces, café upgrades, and an enhanced mini-market. All  of these improvements are designed to support residents’ independence and lifestyle choices.
