13 WHAM: Mother and Daughter Walk Nursing Journey Together

Brandi Pittman and her daughter Brianna Muhammad graduated from Monroe Community College’s Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Program last spring, with the mother-daughter duo ranking 1st and 2nd in their class.

“What inspired me to come into this career was actually my mother,” Pittman, who was the class Valedictorian in 2024, told 13 WHAM News for a special Nurses Week/Mother’s Day story on May 7. “My mother was also a nurse,” said Pittman. While her mother (Muhammad’s Grandmother) passed away in 1998, she explained that her eventual career path was tied to her own mother’s nursing journey. “I was fortunate enough to watch her become a nurse herself when I was around 5 years old.”

Both Pittman and Muhammad now work as LPNs at St. John’s Home, where they continue their nursing journey in long-term care as part of the team brought together by one of their MCC instructors: St. John’s Director of Nursing Natasha Jackson.

As for Muhammad, she plans to further her nursing education while she works with her mother at St. John’s. “I knew since I was younger I was going to be a nurse practitioner,” Muhammad said. “I want to open my own clinic.”
