St. John’s Garden Club Springs Back into Action

After years of inactivity due to the pandemic, the St. John’s Home Garden Club is back and up-and-running. Led by the St. John’s Therapeutic Recreation Team, a club of about 15 residents recently met to go over logistics and plan for their upcoming Garden Factory outing.

Residents plan to fill the bare plots in the main courtyard with flowers, herbs, and vegetables that they all voted on during the meeting. Some of the plants on the list include dahlias, marigolds, bell peppers, mint, and lavender. Many residents bring years of gardening experience, so they suggested certain plant varieties that they knew can thrive in the courtyard, as well as herbs that deter critters.

Members are also hoping that some of their vegetables and herbs can be used by dining services, so they have included St. John’s Home Director of Dining Services Wyndell Mewborn in this project.

Prior to their planned outing to the Garden Factory on May 9, a few residents have already taken it upon themselves to weed and clean up some of the plots when they are outside.

St. John’s Resident Catherine Dausey says she is “very excited for the garden and already started weeding” when she visits the courtyard.

After their visit to pick up seeds and bulbs, residents and employees plan to plant on May 19 following the Lilac Festival.
