Volunteering: Every Minute Counts
Tanesia Keaton is a force to be reckoned with. At 27 years old, she works, attends school to earn her degree in social work, interns, raises her two young kids, and volunteers at St. John’s Home.
During the time Tanesia spends at St. John’s, she gives manicures to elders and transports them to events and activities. The little things make a huge difference, and Tanesia knows this first hand. She often just sits with elders—talking, listening to music, and even singing. “I love it here,” she says.
It is clear that she brightens the day of every elder she comes in contact with, and that they brighten her day in return. “You just get this feeling when elders are happy to see you—you feel like you’re doing your job and your job is accomplished. If I can make their day, I’m happy.”
We cannot thank our dedicated St. John’s volunteers enough for all they do and the positive impact they make on elders’ lives.
