A member of the Rochester Police Department Mounted Unit takes time to visit with an elder.

The Rochester Police Department Mounted Unit made a visit to St. John’s Home on Wednesday, August 19, bringing joy to elders and their families. Elders laughed and smiled as they pet the horses and chatted with police officers.

The Mounted Patrol visit was featured on 13WHAM’s Bright Spot.

The officers offered details about a day’s work with the horses and what they enjoy most about working on mounted patrol. Many elders talked to the officers about the horses they had owned and loved.

The four horses stood calmly and lapped up the extra attention, gently nudging elders and offering their nose for an extra pat.

St. John’s Therapeutic Recreation Department did a wonderful job organizing the event.

“I saw so many smiles and laughter from elders and staff, it was wonderful to see!” says St. John’s Home Therapeutic Recreation Specialist AmySue Ras.

There’s no doubt the visit brightened the days of elders, their families, and staff, making the visit a great experience for all involved.
