Lexi The Dog’s Story

Green House Home Adopts a New Resident

A dog living at a nursing home?  Elders living at 75 Sonoma Drive, one of St. John’s Penfield Green House Homes, said “yes,” and found not only the perfect companion for them, but also a happy home for a pet in need.

Alexandra, or Lexi, as she’s called, came to live at the Green House Home on June 24.  She is sharing it with ten elders, staff, and families.  She is 5 1/2 years old, weighs 70 pounds, and is a Labrador-Mastiff mix. After rescuing her from a shelter, Dave Maynard of the Hamlin Dog Control identified Lexi as a potential fit for the home, brought her out for a visit, and after consensus from the elders and staff, helped to make her a permanent resident. This collaboration with a community partner made the process of finding the right dog an easier one.

As do the elders living at the home, Lexi has a care plan that staff are following to ensure the needs of both the elders and Lexi are being met. Lexi’s adoption illustrates what is unique about the Green House model of skilled nursing care.  The elders have invited Lexi to share their daily lives–to be part of a family in a real home, in a real neighborhood.

“She brings a lot of joy to everybody…She likes being in with lots of people.”

Dorothy Carcelli, Elder

Note: Lexi passed away in July, 2016 after over two years of providing love and companionship to the elders, staff, and anyone who visited Moore House.
