St. John’s Home Administrator Focuses on Consistency and Communication

Vina Bonner

St. John’s Home Vice President of Skilled Services and Administrator Vina Bonner has established a list of priorities as she becomes acclimated with St. John’s Home and the residents who live here, the families who support them, and the staff members who provide care each day.

“I am active on the floors and making rounds,” says Bonner. “We are making sure we are establishing a consistent presence in all three buildings while we round with housekeeping and other departments.” Bonner notes she has given out hundreds of her business cards in her first few weeks at St. John’s Home.

Bonner is also prioritizing communication and addressing resident and family concerns. “We are working to address grievances and complaints within 24 hours,” says Bonner. “I also want to make sure that staff members are communicating with families effectively and following up in a timely manner.”

Bonner reports that she has already seen an improvement in response time to resident and family concerns. She has also focused on improving how people receive updates and information on each floor. With help from social work, communication boards with policies, community resources, and other pertinent messaging have been established in high-visibility areas across all three buildings.

Other priorities for Bonner include collaborating with UR Medicine Geriatrics Group, a physician group led by Dr. Dallas Nelson, who began overseeing on-site medical care at St. John’s Home on September 1. She also hopes to develop greater opportunities for mentoring, by “recognizing outstanding staff members who can help provide the proper tools, training, and resources new employees need to be successful.”

Additionally, a date for the next Family Council meeting has been set for Tuesday, October 27. Family members of St. John’s residents are encouraged to attend– please be on the lookout for more information about time and location for Family Council at St. John’s Home.
