St. John’s Officially Welcomes Joey B’s at Brickstone with Grand Opening Celebration

St. John’s President and CEO Charlie Runyon addresses the crowd with Chef Joe Brophy at his side.

Less than one year after Brickstone by St. John’s opened its doors, the revolutionary senior living community welcomed Joey B’s restaurant Monday, June 1, as the first in a series of retail partners. The grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony drew dignitaries and community members from the region to celebrate this momentous occasion. Located at 1325 Elmwood Avenue in the town of Brighton, the restaurant opened in May 2015.

“The addition of Joey B’s to the neighborhood brings to light St. John’s groundbreaking concept of New Urbanism, a notion that makes smart use of the land available to enhance the social interaction and comfort of a true neighborhood and promotes the integration of community members, no matter their life situation or age,” St. John’s Vice President of Senior Housing Paul Bartlett said. “St. John’s focuses on helping seniors remain an important part of their neighborhood and community, rather than a traditional senior living model. Joey B’s is open to the public, creating a retail space and culinary experience to be enjoyed by residents, families and the community alike.”

Brighton Town Supervisor Bill Moehle attended the event at Brickstone’s Wintergarden and took a few minutes to speak about the progress St. John’s is making toward building a unique living experience for seniors.

“Brighton is a community of neighborhoods,” Moehle said, “and right here in this building is another neighborhood.”

Chef Joseph Brophy opened Joey B’s in 1992 in Fairport along the Erie Canal. Starting as a dishwasher when he was 16, Brophy moved his way up through the culinary world. He became chef at the Strathallan Hotel until 1989. From there, he went on to travel around the state, accepting a two-year stage with Chef Jean Morel at L’hostellerie Bressane in Hillsdale, New York, before opening Joey B’s.

“Joey B’s and Brickstone is the perfect partnership,” Bartlett said. “We strive every day to help our residents embrace living and be active, vibrant parts of the community, and this is a great way to bring the two together. We are excited to open up our retail space to the public, and encourage the citizens of Brighton and the Greater Rochester area to experience the new Joey B’s location with us.”

Joey B’s pays homage to the golden age of French cooking in American restaurants. The menu is replete with classics: escargot in puff pastry, baked brie, French onion soup en croute, Caesar salad, steak au poivre, duck a l’orange, shrimp scampi and sea scallop gratin, as well as rack of lamb, and veal and pork tenderloin.

Brickstone by St. John’s opened on April 30, 2014. Adjacent to St. John’s Meadows in the town of Brighton, Brickstone comprises 102 dwelling units — apartments and lofts, one-story bungalows and two-story townhouses — situated around natural wetlands. The design and layout of the development also includes walking trails, pathways and retail space.
