Embrace living with the Happy Hastings Blogger

What incredible weather we’ve been having. I was waiting for my ride after exercising in the SJH staff fitness center Monday when I stepped outside and found the mild temp and steady rain delightful, so I pulled up a chair. There was some lightening and thunder, a soft rolling storm. I couldn’t help but think how this is just what I would do if I was home. Sit on my front porch and watch the storm. So I enjoyed it. It was amazing that on November 14th, I could sit outside and enjoy such a wonderful moment. The next time I wait for my ride it could be snowing, or blustery, or who knows what? So, that’s how I started the week, enjoying a wonderful rain storm sitting on the elders’ porch on November 14th.

This week brought us cocktail hour where the SJH Band played. What talented musicians we have here! An elder from the Meadows has joined the group.

A sock hop was enjoyed by many in the 2 South neighborhood. They were “cuttin’ up the rug” – Check out the pics on our web photo gallery. In the afternoon, many SJH folks were entertained by the Oasis Tappers, a group of tap dancers ranging in age 63 to 81! They tapped their way into our hearts and were pretty snappy for their ages. Another example of how age is soooo much an attitude. I hope to join that group some day!

If you’re walking through our halls these days, you can smell the aroma of pies baking. Many neighborhoods are preparing for Thanksgiving and some of the neighborhoods have already been enjoying the tastes. Pie night, Harvest pot luck (all day) and decorating too! As they say, “Tis the season!”

Our week ends with a friend and colleague retiring from our home. We will miss him. Thanks for making us feel safe and secure. The best part of his retiring is that we are all celebrating this afternoon at the Distillery. Cheers!

A Look at the Week from the Happy Hastings Blogger

Catching up with my blog this week. The truth is, one of my family members was admitted to St. John’s last week. Not that I haven’t been through the whole process of having to choose a nursing home for a family member.  In the 1990s I had that experience with both my grandmothers. That experience might have even influenced me to work in long term care.  Nonetheless, last week was hectic and emotional for members of my husband’s family. A good reminder of how others feel when their loved one comes to St. John’s. You are sure enough walking in their shoes.
Say it ain’t so Joe. Wow – the news about Joe Paterno has been the most discussed topic in the lobby this week. It certainly has rocked the Penn State world. (I graduated Penn State 1994) So sad, that’s why it is ALWAYS best to do the right thing in any situation.

And what a wonderful heat wave we’ve enjoyed!!! Wednesday was in the 70′s and we certainly felt it in the air and in everyone’s moods. The elders were getting their last breath of fresh air before the snow flies. It was great seeing everyone going outside to enjoy the warm air in November!!!!

We had customer appreciation day Thursday in the lobby. A few donut holes and mini muffins were offered to our customers. It’s the little things in life that mean so much. We call them “simple pleasures.” Something we always encourage people to do with our elders. Enjoy a little simple pleasure with someone today. :)

Oh, oh, on Friday we saw the snow flakes fall with the sun shining right behind them. It was certainly very November like. Cold, brisk and snowy. Fortunately, the sun came back out and we didn’t see any more snow.

We had a  wonderful Veteran’s Day celebration Friday. Members of Girl Scout Troop 860, Pittsford, NY were here to help out. Our veterans looked great and we certainly appreciate them. Enjoy your week end.

Fall is in the Air in the Hastings Lobby

With no Bills game last weekend, there wasn’t much chatter this morning. No one hanging around the lobby is watching the World Series either. Such sport apathy this week. I’m a Nascar fan and no one around wants to talk about that either. What a quiet Monday.

Tuesday began with lots of sunshine and cool temperatures. We had many visitors from within today. It’s nice to see people who work here and come down to say “hello” and see how we’re doing. See – that’s all part of nurturing relationships. That’s what we do – check up on each other and make sure we’re ok. :)

Wednesday was dark, dank and cool. The weather didn’t stop us from having our own sunshine. I guess when it rains, everyone decides to call the nursing home cause the phone rang off the hook today. Parking was a challenge too. What is it about the rain? Back to the sunshine. We got kissed by several therapy dogs and a couple of real cute kids “high fived” us. We also made 4 pots of coffee today – a sure indication that the weather is changing.

Friday’s sunshine certainly changed everyone’s mood. Moods are generally elevated due to the fact it is Friday. Had fun with the kids from Generations at St. John’s today. They were all interested in our pumpkins on the desk. Those little faces are soooo cute. Kids can make you forget all your troubles with their innocence and believable nature. We’re lucky they are on our campus and visit us daily. Enjoy the weekend.

Highlights from the Happy Hastings Blogger

Ok, The Happy Hastings Lobby Blogger went to visit our new Green House homes in Penfield last Friday. OMG!!!!! Ok, I was so blown away with the new style nursing home – I can’t even put into words what I felt. That’s all I’m talking about today – with anyone who’ll listen. To actually see the Green House home and realize that 10 people will live there, in a beautiful house, with beautiful surroundings, in a community of people. They can go outside when ever they want and sit on a front porch. They have there own bedroom and bathroom. Life will be enriched there. You can tell. People who work there will be enriched and meaningful relationships will form. It is pretty amazing to see what the future of long-term care is. I want to live there, I want to work there. Do you think they could use a blogger?

Tuesday temperatures were cool, but the sun was out. We can tell the temperature is going down because we made 3 pots of coffee today. There is always hot water, coffee and cold water available in the lobby during the day. The season has changed. We see the children from Generations Day Care come in with their jackets and hats on. Those little people can brighten up any ones day. We are fortunate to have them visit us.

Wednesday we woke up to thunder and lightening. The rain came and went. Inside the lobby we were busy. Lots of visitors, phone calls and guests. We didn’t let the weather dampen our spirits.

Thursday was fun because we got the left over cookies from a meeting in the Briggs room. That allows the residents to be ambassadors of the home, offering cookies to those they come into contact with. That can be one of the most fun and fulfilling things they do. The recipients enjoy it too!

Friday we started out with a fire drill. We all sprung into action directing everyone to a safe area. Afterwards, many people were looking to see the firemen and trucks. Isn’t funny, no matter what age, people love to see firemen and fire trucks. After the show we did a little dancing. There’s a couple of people who visit the lobby that come especially on Fridays to do the “Friday Dance.” Not everyone has the weekend off, so not everyone celebrates Friday. We have to give a shout out to the many weekend warriors who work the weekends at our Home. They deserve a round of applause and appreciation. See ya next week when we will embrace another week of living at St. John’s Home.

The Week at a Glance from the Happy Hastings Blogger

Woweeeee, back from vacation and missed the Green House dedication. From the pictures we’ve seen -it looks amazing.:) This has been a long time coming. Every Eden Associate at St. John’s Home has been waiting for us to open a Green House home. It is finally happening – deinstitutionalizing care for the elders in a neighborhood setting. Yipee!!!! Such a busy Monday, those Bills won again and much of the mumblings were about how great they are doing -which they are.
Mr. Parks was in for the employee of the year luncheon. So good to see our former CEO.Teresa Cannon, from dining services, won. Well deserved.
Tuesday brought great weather for October 11. Warm and sunny all day. We had over 30 student nurses in our lobby this morning -all in their white jackets and uniforms. It’s nice to see our future nurses while they are in the learning process. It’s even nicer that we can teach them things. Another friend, from MediCab, dropped in to say hello. He use to drop off someone from the Day Break program. It’s always soooo good to see old friends. The fact that he stops by to visit us demonstrates how we develop relationships with those who come to our home.

The lobby was busy with another quick folding job on Wednesday. Done with our work early, that left us with time to do our usual meet, greet, laugh, and clown. Some days I wonder what kind of impression we really give to people?

Thursday was the cookie bake off between the 6-Reservoir, 2-Reservoir, 3-Hastings, and 1-Hastings neighborhoods. As luck would have it, the Hastings Lobby happy blogger was asked to be a judge at this bake off. The cookies were presented and judged on taste, appearance, originality, texture, and aroma. 6-Reservoir was declared the winner and cookies were passed around and enjoyed by all .Thank goodness we have Jazzercise classes in our fitness center for staff to help burn off all those delicious calories consumed.

Friday began with our usual visitors in the morning enjoying a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper. By the afternoon, a long time volunteer came in with her daughter to visit. Rita has volunteered with us for over 30 years. She is in between setting up her transportation and hasn’t been at our place for a little bit now. It’s always so good to see her. She always brings with her a wonderful sense of humor, bright smile and funny stories. Happy weekend.

The Happy Hastings Blogger Captures Another Week

Monday was so filled with excitement about the Buffalo Bills game Sunday. There are a lot of Bills fans here and boy ‘o boy they were all happy about them beating the Patriots. It was the talk of the day. As for us lobby dwellers, it was work, work, work. Another mailing and another productive work day.

Tuesday we had visitors from the 2 Hastings neighborhood. They enjoyed a cup of coffee and we even put on a Tony Bennett record. It’s been a long time since we played records in the lobby. We had a tender moment too. A family member of an elder who passed away wanted to express to our gardener her appreciation for his involvement with her Dad. They were Green Thumb Society members together and it meant the world to her Dad. That’s what relationships are – meaningful – and that makes a difference.

Wednesday was a work day all day. We were so busy stuffing and labeling envelopes, we didn’t notice that the day went by lickety split.

On Thursday, we watched the wireless installers work in the lobby. I’m surprised they got their work done with all our shenanigans and practical jokes. It’s called wireless connection, but they were pulling wires everywhere????

Friday was a fun day. We had several elders visit this day. Jokes, cookies and coffee were shared. It was one of those days that flew by. There was a lot of conversation, laughing and general fooling around. What a wonderful way to spend the day.
How lucky we are to have relationships like these. It’s so true – at St. John’s we embrace living each and every day :)

A Sweet Week… A recap from the Hastings Lobby

There’s no better way to start the week than with a cupcake war. Our social work and business offices decided to have an all out battle with cupcakes. I’m not talking throwing. I’m talking taste and appearance. WOW!!! What a sweet competition. We made the Bright Spot on Channel 13 – it was so delicious! The elders and staff certainly had their share of sugar; all of this before lunch. Now that’s living!

Tuesday we all felt like we were coming off our sugar high from yesterday. Nonetheless, we ended up attending the cocktail hour (a different kind of sugar.) The St. John’s Jam band played and got us all rocking and rolling. It’s really enjoyable for our residents to have a “home” band that they can listen to as they practice and will perform for them for free. Plus, it shows the talent and dedication to the elders our employees have. They go above and beyond what is required of them. What a marvelous group of musicians. :)

Wednesday was a work day. Letters needed to be folded and stuffed into envelopes. It’s funny, but when there’s work, some of the Hastings lobby elders suddenly have something else to do. Oh well, they’ve earned the right to bow out.

Thursday began with a little rain. Perfect day to work – which is what we did. It’s the little things in life that count and yesterday we found and used a folding machine – right there in the lobby. It might not seem like a lot to you, but for the volunteers in the lobby, it was a blessing. We cut our work in half with it. Now we have more stuffing and labeling to do; but at least the folding was quick, easy and painless ( no paper cuts).

Friday brought us the first day of fall. We began with a work group. Our work came to a halt – we needed to move on to the next step, but the next step wasn’t ready. That left us free for the afternoon. We celebrated with Day Break a little bit. It’s their 36th birthday this week. It’s always a lot of fun to stop in and see the folks in Day Break. After that, we mostly messed around with everybody who came by and came in. The best part of the day was when someone bought us ice cream. Yum yum.

Until next week, The Happy Hastings Blogger

A Look at the Week from the Hastings Lobby

Another week at St. John’s Home. Monday brought us Keebler chocolate chip cookies for our coffee corner. Everyone seemed to enjoy them – they didn’t last the day. We do get excited about offering snacks with our beverages. It’s a nice warm fuzzy to offer our guests. Environmental Services brought out balloons, a banner and candy for the desk, in accordance with Environmental Services week. Hats off to our staff who keep our home sparkling clean. The residents often comment on how shiny and clean our floors are. :)

Tuesday was musical. We heard the good sounds of Frank Herkimer and his group. Very nice and lively. The concert was outdoors because of the warm weather. We are cherishing the last days of summer.

Wednesday brought a big surprise. The Hastings Dynamic Duo (Carl Grant and Susan Thomas-Payne) placed 2nd in the St. John’s Idol Contest. Wow!!! They have been enjoying the bragging rights to that. Anita Sansevere, from the 4 South neighborhood, won 1st place and Andrea Spencer, from Human Resources, won third. The event was tearful, joyful, and a lot of fun. Just another example of how we embrace living here at St. John’s Home. The talent we have in our organization is pretty amazing.

Thursday was gloomy outside, but warm inside. Word about our new Green House homes is buzzing around the home. The Green House homes staff is training, families are talking about it and information is flowing to the staff relating to the changes. It’s exciting for some and scary for others. Not everyone embraces change.

Friday was sunshine and giggles. Not too much going on in the lobby this day. We noticed you need a jacket these days cause it’s chilly outside. Mr. Sunday, who sells shoes that fit the elders, told us a very funny joke, which we can’t remember now. Blog ya next week.

A Look at the Week…from the Happy Hastings Lobby Blogger

This week at St. John’s Home brought us some wet, gray weather, but the spirits inside were bright. We have to thank all the dedicated nursing staff who worked on Labor Day. The elders can’t make it without them, so they appreciate the holiday workers. Pat Shanley, from Spiritual Care, brought the lobby group danish on Wednesday. The sweetness was generously spread to those who entered that day. Resident Council met and had a good meeting. It’s a brand new group. One member stated that they aren’t sure what they’re doing yet, but they seem to be making progress.

Thursday seemed to be another gray day and we had news of flooding down in Binghamton, and PA. A resident’s granddaughter, Sarah, was telling us how they canceled classes at SUNY in Binghamton because the Susquehanna River was expected to crest and flood. The college serves as an evacuation point for residents in the community. Oh boy, that just makes us appreciate Rochester that much more. We’re always complaining about the weather, but at least we don’t get floods or hurricanes. Day Break had entertainment that was so much fun. Cindy Kingsley sang and played Carmen Miranda for the folks there. A special moment was when one participant sang in Spanish with her.

Friday brings us sunshine :) What a mood elevator. Several residents enjoy reading the newspaper in the morning sitting around the Hastings desk. Today, a resident who was looking at the ads, pointed to a thong and asked me, “What’s that?” Oh boy, how does one tell the elder what a thong is?

That’s our weekly blog for this week. Catch up with you next week.

Green House Homes for Dementia Care by Rebecca Priest, St. John’s Guide

The recent news of Pat Summitt, the winningest coach in women’s collegiate basketball history, sharing with the world that she is living with dementia at age 59 has turned millions of heads in the sports world and country. I’ll watch sports news and her story carefully, because how this is handled is indicative, in part, to how ready our country is to discuss the state of long term care for all people, but especially those living with dementia. In no other world does an individual’s capacity to “do” and achieve matter so publicly as in the high stakes sports arena.
Pat has stated that she will continue to coach, but wanted to acknowledge that she will rely heavily on her assistant coaches to support her through this. Many people are saying, “Really…continue coaching?”
This is where the paradigm of medicalization, fear, and misunderstanding begins. If Pat had released that she was living with a mental health diagnosis, a chronic disease, or a cancer, then society can understand that she would continue coaching. Similarly, the notion of leaning on her supports for help through these chronic illnesses would be accepted without question. Dementia, however, continues to invoke a life of decreased meaning, purpose, and disability beyond what our culture can understand.
The Green House homes will support many people who are living with varying levels of dementia. It is a nursing home, and the model is established because there is a working theory with increasing evidence to support it that environment and staff connectivity will improve the quality of life and growth for people who are living with this disease.
Take the following for example: You are taking an afternoon nap and wake up to a stranger who says he or she is here to help you with your shower. He or she takes you out of your bedroom, not to a familiar bathroom, but down a corridor with people sitting in the corridor to a shower room that you’ve never seen before, and proceed to help you undress.
You say “No, thank you,” but that person insists today is your shower day.
This scenario happens every day to people living in an institution. If you had NO dementia, wouldn’t this unnerve you? Compound this and other scenarios with a sense of difficulty interpreting the world around you and it is no wonder we have people who struggle to remain calm, ask for home, and look for familiar friends. In the Green House homes, there returns a sense of privacy, dignity, and connectivity that is far more challenging to support in the traditional building and model of care. This human habitat model is based on power to determine how they live their lives returning to the hands of people who are living and growing together in these homes.
Green House homes are the right thing to do to push a change in the way society views elders, long term care, and especially the way we view how to support people who are living with dementia.
My thoughts and prayers are with Pat and her close friends and family during this time. It is my hope that she can have options if she needs them that encourage her life and maintain her abilities and support her in finding meaning. Options like the Green House homes.
